House or villa in Phuket:
What is the difference between a Villa and a House?
As has been pointed out by many real estate buyers in Phuket – a villa here in Thailand just seems to be a fancy name for what we at home would call a house. While trying to find out myself what the actual definition is I came across this humorous Thailand Property forum posts - “Speaking as an Englishman, who when living in Britain lived in a common or garden 'ouse, I find the word 'villa' is just a snob term. It was a term probably first coined by property salesmen, after all in Spain a house is a 'Casa', in France it is 'Maison', so why not just simply say house?"
There might be some truth to this and I might even myself be guilty of uploading some listing and calling a house for “2 Bed room villa near the beach in Phuket.” We even have a distinction between houses and villas on our menus here in this web site. For me personally a villa has always been a big free standing house that is nice with a spacious garden or a view or something else that makes stand out from the average “'ouse”We should perhaps call these properties houses in the future and change the menu item to “Phuket Luxury Villas” instead of just Phuket Villas. Should be clearer I believe.We have a feeling I believe when something is not just a house but in fact also a villa. This Sea view Kamala Beach villa, on the west coast of Phuket , is most definitively a luxury villa and not a house.
All houses are not as obvious to classify as the above luxury Phuket villa. To return to my quest, these are the definitions I have found:

“A villa is a term for a large house overlooking a village or city- - usually over 5,000 sq ft in size(465 sq.m). To use a syllogism, all villas are independent houses but not all houses are villas.” The latter part is actually true for our database where villas are both classed as houses and villas. If you click Phuket Houses you will find all kinds of houses – from town homes on the back streets of Patong to luxury resort villas located on 4 rais of sea view rai near some Phuket west coast beach.
